Abstract

Hungarian society had to live through several cataclysms in the "long forties" (1938-1953). During this period, the independent middle class, and the bourgeoisie lost a significant part of its wealth. Pharmacists were not exempted from this process. In 1939 the Hungarian government decided to confiscate Jewish-owned pharmacies. The process of liquidation of private property ended in 1950 when all pharmacies were nationalised by the Hungarian state and the Sovietisation of these institutions began. In this paper, I will present the first step of this process, the Aryanization of Hungarian pharmacies.
