Abstract

This study explores the impact of visual and linguistic toolkits of the Hungarian language weekly newspaper Új Magyar Képes Újság in Croatia on the local Hungarian community in minority. It pays particular attention to the visual world of the newspaper, its identifiable symbols and their role in strengthening the Hungarian community’s identity and cultural cohesion. The study is part of the research entitled “Forms and Functions of Community Culture in the Preservation of Ethnic Hungarian Consciousness in Drávaszög, Croatia” conducted by the Cultural Heritage Research Group of the University of Pécs. The research was supported by the National Institute for Culture’s Academic Grant Program for Public Culture.
