Abstract

Radon gas and its alpha emitting radioactive decay product concentration variation in the environment can be measured assembling existing low cost detector and electric components. In this proposed design, a commercially available PIN photodiode sensor was used. In the past several application did show that this type of diode is suitable for detecting energetic high LET charged particles. To make it operational this device is coupled to a purpose made signal analyser. The PIN induced weak current pulse is converted into a voltage pulse by a charge-sensitive preamplifier. This voltage pulse is then further processed conveniently by the following electronic chain: shaping amplifier, an analog-to-digital converter, and a pulse height analyser. That allows for alpha particle energy determination as well as counting events to be displayed on selected peripherals. The monitor detect with a counting rate of 500 events per second, with a counting efficiency of ~14%. The designed and tested battery operated system, has an active long life, relatively small size to be employed for alpha radiation measurement, such as radon and daughter alpha emitters. A particular application that could benefits, is environmental radioactivity mapping.
