Abstract
In twelve theses, Boris Nikitin’s essay outlines documentary theatre in the 21st century. The text refers to the possibilities of non-fiction, but even more so to its contradictions and pitfalls. The common forms of documentary attempt to represent reality, but are never able to capture it. They often reproduce preconceived views, images, and conventions, even when they attempt to criticize or subvert them. But perhaps this is precisely why the documentary genre repeatedly rewrites reality, in both a positive and negative sense. It is emancipatory and destructive at the same time.
