Abstract

Ferenc Farkas wrote fi fty-four fi lm scores between 1932 and 1973, thus he is one of the few Hungarian composers whose life and work is strongly connected to the screen. During his years in Kolozsvár/Cluj (1941–1944) he was involved in the production of Men in the Alps (1942) awarded at the Venice Biennale, and in Rákóczi’s Song (1943), the representative historical fi lm of the war years in Hungary. While generally music for films is seen as some kind of a routine work for the composers, Farkas’s scores always had fi rst-class artistic values and significant impact on the composer’s career.
