Abstract
The article explores the parallels and divergences in the press representations and refugee-narratives of the Transylvanian and East German refugee crises in Hungary between 1987 and 1989, drawing on the coverage found in the period’s official daily newspapers and in its most influential samizdat publication. While the Hungarian press framed the Romanian refugee crisis in ways that suggested social and moral involvement, the case of East German refugees appeared through a more detached, institutional, and ostensibly objective discourse.
