Abstract

„Consider the lesser nobility here,” wrote Maria Theresa to her daughter, Maria Christina, „they are different from those in other countries; there is more individuality among them than among the magnates...” Why is Hungarian nobility so unique? How does it differ from the nobility of other countries? Previously, noble titles were associated with numerous privileges, – which they stubborly insisted on keepin – led many to attempt document forgery either by using counterfeit seals or altering texts through erasure (rasura) or interpolation. Some even sold the armorial letters of noble families that had died out in the male line. In my study, I analyze the processes of noble verification, primarily in the 18th century, such as Charles III’s Generalis Nobilium Investigatio and the noble verification trials ordered by Maria Theresa. Through legal cases, I illustrate the various forms of fraudulent use of a noble title misuse involving noble titles. It is certain, that the tax exemption of the Hungarian nobility was unique in its kind. Consequently, contesting the title that guaranteed this privilege, as well as the proof of nobility that vertified it.
