Abstract

Prior to this research, no data were available on Ethiopian arboreal mites. Two new species of Scheloribates (Scheloribates) (Oribatida, Scheloribatidae) were collected from branches and bark of Juniperus procera, Erica trimera, and Hagenia abyssinica in the Bale Mountains National Park, southeastern Ethiopia. The adult of S. (S.) junipersicus sp. nov. differs from the related species S. (S.) ascendens and S. (S.) heterotrichus by: the body size; the length and morphology of the interlamellar and notogastral setae; the direction of the bothridial seta; the morphology of the anterior margin of the pteromorph; and the length of the circumpedal carina. The adult of S. (S.) hagenicus sp. nov. differs from the related species S. (S.) repetitivus in body size, the morphology of the lamellar and interlamellar setae, and the length of the anal and adanal setae. The deutonymph and tritonymph of S. (S.) junipersicus sp. nov. are described; they are characterized by long, setiform, barbed, rostral, lamellar, and interlamellar setae (with relative length in˃le˃ro), comparatively short, clavate, barbed bothridial seta, and medium-sized to long, setiform, barbed gastronotic setae with distinct excentrosclerite (except c3) at their base.
