Abstract
As urbanization expands, outdoor thermal comfort becomes crucial for improving city life. Sustainable design strategies in urban planning can mitigate climate change impacts and enhance residents' well-being. However, the lack of climatic considerations often leads to uncomfortable outdoor spaces, especially in extreme weather. This paper aims to evaluate the effect of design strategies on outdoor thermal comfort in two residential neighborhoods in Sulaimani City, Iraq. Using ENVI-met software, simulations on the hottest day of 2021 showed that neither neighborhood provided a fully comfortable outdoor environment; however, the first neighborhood performed better due to effective design strategies. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating climate-responsive design elements in urban planning to enhance outdoor thermal comfort.
