Abstract

A városfalak, városerődítések a középkori európai városok elengedhetetlen elemei voltak, amelyek világosan elhatárolták a városokat a falvaktól. A Német-római Birodalom és a Magyar Királyság területén ezek a védművek nemcsak katonai funkciót töltöttek be, hanem a kiváltság és az önállóság szimbólumai is voltak. Ugyanakkor a városfalak korlátozták a települések terjeszkedését, ami sűrűn beépített, zöldterületekben szegény városi szövet kialakulásához vezetett. A hadviselés modernizációjával ezek a védelmi rendszerek elvesztették jelentőségüket, és Európa számos városában lebontásuk értékes belvárosi területeket szabadított fel. | Urban fortifications were indispensable elements of medieval European cities, distinguishing towns from villages. In regions such as the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary, city walls were not only defensive structures but also symbols of privilege and independence. However, these fortifications also constrained urban expansion, leading to densely populated areas with limited green spaces within the walls. With the advent of modern warfare, these walls became obsolete, and their dismantling in various European cities led to the creation of valuable urban spaces. This article examines the transformation of these former fortification zones into green areas, focusing on the cases of Kraków, Nuremberg, and Cologne. It also provides an in-depth analysis of four Slovakian cities — Trnava, Košice, Bardejov, and Levoča — using space syntax methodology to assess the current integration and utilization of these green spaces within the urban fabric. The findings reveal that while these areas have the potential to become vital urban green spaces, their success largely depends on their accessibility and integration into the broader city structure. The study highlights the importance of maintaining and enhancing these spaces to serve as multifunctional areas that contribute to the quality of urban life.
