Abstract

Az első világháború elején Nagy-Britannia a megszállása alatt álló Egyiptomot protektorátusává nyilvánította és a kulcsfontosságú Szuezi-csatorna védelmében csapatokat vezényelt a Nílus menti országba. A csapatok jelentős részben a gyarmatokról, valamint Ausztráliából és Új-Zélandról érkeztek. Ezek a katonák a sivatagi szolgálat mellett a nagyvárosokban kerestek maguknak szórakozási lehetőségeket, ami az alkohol- és drogfogyasztás növekedésével, továbbá a prostitúció terjedésével járt együtt. Előfordultak erőszakos atrocitások a helyiekkel, amelyek közül a legjelentősebb az 1915. április 2-i „lázadás” volt. | At the beginning of the First World War, Great Britain declared occupied Egypt a protectorate and sent troops along the Nile to protect the Suez Canal. The troops came mainly from the colonies, as well as from Australia and New Zealand. In addition to desert service, these soldiers searched for entertainment opportunities in the big cities, which was accompanied by an increase in alcohol and drug consumption and the spread of prostitution. There were violent atrocities against the locals, the most significant of which was the “rebellion” of 2 April 1915.
