Abstract
In October 2022, the fish community of Nagykunság Main Channel was studied at four sampling sites using two different protocols based on the European Union Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) and the Hungarian Biodiversity Monitoring System (HBMS). An electric benthic trawl was also used to examine benthic fish species. A total of 3458 specimens representing 23 fish species were identified. The functional assessment of the different sections revealed trends similar to those observed in other artificial lowland canals. Ecological evaluation indicated that most parts of the watercourse had a moderate status, while the lower section had a poor ecological status. Compared with previous literature data of the Nagykunság Main Channel, no significant differences were observed; most changes were related to population sizes of certain species, such as an increased presence of alien species. No significant differences were observed between the results from the EU WFD and HBMS protocols. The electric benthic trawl provided valuable new data, including the presence of the protected Danube white-finned gudgeon [Romanogobio vladykovi (Fang, 1943)], which previously had no recorded data from the main channel. Additionally, this equipment effectively samples Ponto-Caspian gobies, which are difficult to monitor with traditional electric fishing methods.
