Abstract

This study explores changes in the frequency and spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation-free periods in the Hungarian Great Plain (1980–2020), with a focus on agricultural challenges under climate change. During the study, we analysed the occurrence of dry periods lasting up to 16 days, their seasonal frequency, and their differences in four cities (Szolnok, Hódmezővásárhely, Nyíregyháza, Kalocsa). Based on the data, the frequency of dry periods increased slightly in certain locations; however, the statistical significance of the trend was inconclusive; F-tests mainly indicated increased variance. The two-sample Kolmogorov–Smirnov test revealed that the differences in distribution between cities were not significant, indicating that the hypothesis of regional divergence was not confirmed. The research also emphasizes the need for increased soil moisture retention capacity, especially in sandy and saline soils, which lose moisture more quickly due to a lack of precipitation, negatively affecting their agricultural productivity.
