Abstract

This study applies Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory to examine how translation, publishing practices, and censorship shaped the Hungarian reception of Bohumil Hrabal. For Jauss, meaning emerges not only from the text but through the historical interaction between text and reader. Hrabal complicates this dynamic by deliberately cultivating textual<tab disorder, producing multiple, often contradictory versions through self-censorship, state censorship, and samizdat dissemination. For Czech readers, this instability – encountered directly in competing editions – became central to the reading experience.
