Abstract
The Greek-Orthodox community of Miskolc was one of the most active Greek communities within the Habsburg empire, where Greek commercial companies operated and a Greek-Orthodox church, school, hospital, and elderly nursing home were established. The twenty-nine unpublished documents from the Archive of the Greek-Orthodox Community in Miskolc, published, commented on, and translated here, shed light on the work of the woodcarver Nikolaos Ioannou (mid-18th c. – 1817), also known as Miklós Jankovits, who was born on the Greek island of Naxos. These documents also provide valuable insights into the terms, conditions and materials employed by woodcarvers of that period. Ioannou was active in several Greek churches in Hungary and Serbia and created remarkable woodcarvings.
