Abstract

The Author concludes: The migrating curlew species are protected in Hungary since 1971. The paper sees answer whether the earlier hunting of these species might have influenced the development of the stock. From the study it became obvious that the Numenius species were not significant with respect to shooting. One exception is the steppe (puszta) like habitats of the greater area of Szeged-Hódmezóvásárhely and Békéscsaba in Southeast Hungary, where a small and a large curlew species was shooted regularly in the last decades of the XIX. century and the early decades of the XX. century. Before 1930, game birds shot from pits with the help of decoys were sold in the market in Szeged. After 1935 some 10-15 sportsmen hunted for curlew. The endangered Slender-billed curlew (Numenius tenuirostris) very seldom appeared in the bag of hunters. According to the information reviewed, the former hunting practices never endangered the curlew species. The gradual decline of the quantity of the migrating curlew is explained with the deterioration of habitat.
