Abstract

At the beginning of the 3rd century AD, Cassius Dio wrote his Roman History in Greek comprising some 80 books and covering the period from the origins of Rome until his own time. Unfortunately, the first books have not come down to us. To find out how Dio relates the origins of Rome, we must refer to a Byzantine summary, written by Johannes Zonaras (12th century) and to several fragments found in later grammarians or lawyers. All these texts confirm that, for Dio, there is absolutely no doubt about the Trojan origins of Latium’s inhabitants.
