Abstract

Myths about the founding of Carthage (Qart Hadasht) by colonizing Phoenicians from Tyre include the Dido-Byrsa Hill ox hide story and add mostly credible citations by Virgil, Strabo, Timaeus, Pompeius Trogus, Velleius Paterculus, Servius, Silius Italicus and Appian, among others. Choosing the location of Carthage itself, however, is also factually important in North Africa, where Phoenicians established a vital colony among local peoples, with whom they would hybridize, for commercial and geographical advantages in trade and commerce. Carthage itself is established in a most logical topography, as the author has also shown elsewhere.
