Abstract

Lonovics József csanádi püspököt 1843-ban választották a Magyar Tudós Társaság ti-szteleti tagjává. A tudós közösség döntésében kiemelt szerepet játszott a főpap magyar nyelv ügye melletti elkötelezettsége. A tanulmány az egykori akadémiai tag, politikus, diplomata reformkori működését az oktatásügy kapcsán igyekszik körbejárni, olyan tár-gyköröket érintve, mint a püspök családi háttere, a fiatalkori egri működésének hatásai, a temesvári iskolaalapítási törekvései, az országos szintű oktatási reformelképzelései vagy a külföldi iskolalátogatáshoz való viszonya. | József Lonovics, Bishop of Csanád, was elected an honorary member of the Hungarian Learned Society (later: Hungarian Academy of Sciences) in 1843. The Archpriest’s commitment to the cause of the Hungarian language played a key role in the decision of the scientific community. The study attempts to explore the work of the academician, politician, diplomat during the reform era in relation to education, touching on topics such as the bishop’s family background, the effects of his youth in Eger, his efforts to found a school in Temesvár, his ideas for national educational reform, and his attitude towards school visits abroad.
