Abstract
This paper, employing a holistic approach that considers literary, epigraphic, iconographic, and topographic evidence, examines how the ideology of autochthony was displayed at the Erechtheion, the most sacred temple on the Acropolis of Athens. Special attention is given to the Erechtheion frieze and to the figures of Kekrops and Erechtheus, principal Athenian heroes who received cult worship within the temple and its surrounding precincts.
