Abstract

Following the Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) habitat preference study of the LAJTA Project between 1992 and 2011 (Map 1) (FARAGÓ & DITTRICH, 2012), we continued the monitoring survey between 2012 and 2024. The 3073-hectare LAJTA Project is intensively farmed, typically in fields exceeding 50 hectares. The monthly dynamics of habitat structure change, i.e. habitat supply (%) is given for all 13 years studied. During the daily monitoring of the Pheasant population according to a standardized protocol (Map 2), the habitat occupied by the individual or flock at the time of observation was recorded in each case. These data were aggregated monthly, thereby determining the monthly habitat use (%). Their findings were based on the observation of 24,237 individuals (Table 1). Based on these two data rows, the IVLEV index (Iv) indicating habitat choice, i.e. habitat preference, was calculated monthly for each habitat type (IVLEV, 1961). Unfavourable habitats for pheasants include maize (Iv= -0.33 – -1.00) and ploughed fields (Iv= -0.51 – -0.98). Moderately unfavourable habitats include winter cereals (Iv= -0.42 – -0.86), oilseed rape (Iv= -0.10 – -0.78), alfalfa (Iv= -0.30 – -0.78) and stubble fields (Iv= -0.08 – -0.76). Weedy areas (Iv= 0.13 – 0.64) and game crops can be assessed as moderately favourable habitats – to varying degrees – in summer (Iv= 0.08 – 0.60) and autumn/winter (Iv=0.72 – 0.83). Very favourable habitat types are forest edges, forest belts, tree rows (Iv= 0.34 – 0.78), and roads, roadsides, ditch banks (Iv= 0.30 – 0.68). Based on the above, authors make a proposal for habitat management aimed at maintaining the Pheasant in the LAJTA Project.
