Abstract
Sándor Bökönyi (1926–1994), the founder of contemporary archaeozoology in Hungary, was born a century ago. Originally trained in veterinary science, he devoted his entire life to archaeology. He achieved results of international importance researching the history of domestic animals in Central Europe and Southwest Asia. At the same time, he played a leading role in representing archaeology at the level of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. An entire generationʼs time has passed since his untimely death. It is therefore instructive to review his career within the context of research history in the late twentieth century.
