Abstract

Early in 1945 the Hungarist leadership under Ferenc Szálasi introduced a new state coat of arms in that part of Hungary where their power still held sway: onto the symbol of the Arrow Cross Party – Hungarist Movement, an arrow cross forming a capital „H” as a supporter was placed the small arms with the Crown. It was for the first time that the symbol of a political party or movement was featured in the Hungarian state coat of arms. The symbol of the arrow cross was born after the use of the swastika, now the symbol of a foreign state (the German Empire) had been banned from September 1933. Most of the Hungarian national socialist movements consequently adopted the use of the arrow cross, which could be interpreted as implying connections with the conquering ancestors and the state-founding kings of the Árpád dynasty. Following the history of events, the paper presents the symbols, vestments and salutation forms of the Hungarist movements, before all those that were connected to Ferenc Szálasi.
