Abstract
| Probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics are playing an increasingly important role in animal husbandry, as they contribute to maintaining healthy gut microbiota and can reduce the need for antibiotics. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and inhibit the growth of pathogens such as Salmonella or E. coli. Bacillus subtilis and other Bacillus species resist environmental influences due to their spore-forming properties and act as effective probiotics, supporting the reduction of oxygen levels in the intestine and the growth of beneficial Lactobacilli. Certain strains of Enterococcus faecium improve feed conversion and stimulate beneficial bacteria in the gut, although caution is needed when using them due to the risk of antibiotic resistance. The yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly improves digestion, performance, and immune response, especially in pigs and poultry. Postbiotics—pre-digested microorganisms and their metabolites—are a safe and stable alternative because they do not carry genetic risk and are easier to store. Their mechanism of action includes inhibition of pathogens (with bacteriocins and organic acids), strengthening of the intestinal barrier function, and modulation of the immune system. Research shows that postbiotics improve intestinal health in pigs, poultry and ruminants, increase antibody production, and promote the development of beneficial microbiota, offering a promising alternative to antibiotics in animal husbandry.
