Abstract

The Czech and Moravian Lutheran pastors who fled to Lower and Upper Hungary after the Battle of White Mountain (1620) did their primary education in their home country, and their higher education at universities in German lands, most often in Wittenberg. The profession-related works – such as numerous sermon booklets published by the Trenčín press – of the Hungarian-born pastors and of those who had arrived as exiles make surprisingly frequent use of secular exempla as intertexts. Some of their quotations from authors of ancient or Renaissance literature even predate the literary use of these texts in Hungarian. However, the analogy or parallelism of meaning between the original work and the exemplary elements extracted from it is by no means always evident. Of course, in the majority of cases, the authors use standard and perfectly obvious exempla to construct their reasoning. However, there are cases where it is not at all obvious that the exemplum borrowed would be suitable to carry the very meaning for which the borrowing author uses it. A preacher’s broad erudition lays the foundations for an exemplum use in which even components unusual in the genre become conceptually chosen means of conveying a normative denominational message.
