Abstract
The paper deals with the global and local buckling resistance of existing steel structural members (compressed columns) and highlights their specialties compared to new steel structures in terms of the imperfections to be applied. In the case of existing steel structures which often have larger imperfections than the manufacturing tolerances proven by on-site measurements, the application of improved buckling coefficients might be necessary during the design process. The current research aims to develop global and local buckling reduction factors for compressed welded steel box-section columns, that account for the impact of amplified geometrical imperfections and the variability of residual stresses on the buckling resis-tance. The current research focuses on the development of these improved imperfection factors for FEM-based design and also for standard-based analytical calculations. Advanced GMNI analyses are employed to investigate pure local and global buckling resistances of I-and box-section columns, incorporating accurate non-amplified local and global imperfections. A parametric study is conducted to systematically investigate the impact of enlarging the imperfection factors and varying residual stresses. The local and global buckling formulas specified in EN1993-1-5 and EN1993-1-1 are calibrated against laboratory test results and/or GMNI analyses to account for the influence of imperfections and residual stresses. Similar calibration process is performed within the current study by modifying the imperfection factor in the buckling formulas considering the enlarged imperfection magnitude. The developed imperfection factors are also tested for the interaction behavior of global and local buckling resistance. Statistical measures are employed to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed formulas compared to the GMNIA results. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Alphose Zingoni; individual chapters, the contributors.
