Abstract
Pressure-swing distillation (PSD) separation of the mixture water(A) ethylenediamine(B) forming a maximum-boiling azeotrope is optimised by surrogate model-based optimisation (SMBO). The total annual cost is minimised, and the resulting optima are verified through rigorous simulations. The feed composition is varied between those of the high- (HP) and low-pressure (LP) azeotrope. The feed enters the low-pressure column (LPC). The low- and highpressure column (HPC) are modelled separately in order to improve convergence. A large number of simulations are performed in points generated in the space of the four input variables (number of trays of the columns, recycle flow rate, composition of the bottom product of LPC and the feed composition) by Latin hypercube sampling. Algebraic surrogate models are fitted in ALAMO to reboiler heat duties and column diameters. By comparing the results with those obtained formerly for the other (HP-LP) sequence, the optimal sequence is determined over the feed composition range.
