Abstract
A fundamental characteristic of military life and war is that it is ruled by military law. In the 18th century, under the influence of the French Revolution, the drills that had been prevalent until then were gradually replaced by virtue-based training in all European armies. This trend can also be observed in the army of the Habsburg Empire. But a similar search for a new direction also took place in the self-defence forces of Natio Hungarica, in the institution of general insurrection. In my thesis, I use court records to try to define the modernisation efforts of the insurrection through regularisation. Can military law be a tool for moral education?
