Abstract

The European Union (EU) that we know today has come a long way from three communities that were created in the 1950s. There were only six countries that firmly stood behind the integration project, both in 1951, when the European Coal and Steel Community was established by the Treaty of Paris, and in 1957, when the European Atomic Energy Community and European Economic Community (EEC) were created by the Treaties of Rome. However, it is important to point out that these initial Treaties already made it clear that its signatories did not intend to create a closed community. Moreover, already in the Preamble of the EEC Treaty, the six founding members were ‘calling upon the other peoples of Europe who share their ideal to join in their efforts’. Starting from the first enlargement in 1973 until the last round in 2013, the EU has expanded its membership to 27 states, while the prospect of EU membership is currently open to 10 partner countries. Through a brief overview of each of the enlargement rounds, this study especially analyses the development of the requirements that candidate countries need to accomplish to become full members of the EU.
