Abstract

| Besides archaeological features dating from the Neolithic to the Modern Ages, two early medieval cemeteries have been unearthed near Vălcani (Romania). The excavated part of the earliest one, characterised mainly by a heterogeneity of orientation (E–W, NE–SW, NNE–SSW, SW–NE, WSW–ENE), contained 35 graves in total. It was the first Early Avar Period funerary site documented south of the Aranca/Aranka River to contain graves with catacombe niche type (also called as graves with an end-wall shaft). Based on certain artefact types, like Szentes type Páhipuszta-subtype earrings, wire bracelet with a prolated end, big or small eye beads, the funerary site could be dated to the first two-thirds of the 7th century AD. Thus, we were able to answer the standard questions (chronology and funerary rituals), but there are many others that we cannot answer only by the means of the classical archaeological approach: I. Without archaeogenetic analyses, we have no knowledge regarding the biological relationships between the individuals in the Vălcani graves, and the social relationships biological realities might reflect. Can we talk about a community or communities in the case of this funerary site? Are the five individuals with VSV-ENE and SW-NE orientation part of this community or are they outsiders? In grave no. 15, the female has a necklace with beads whose types are unknown in the other bead-containing graves. Could these be archaeological signs of exogamy? II. As for whether this community (or these communities) was mobile or sedentary, we may be able to answer this question after analyzing strontium isotopes. III. Similarly, only with the analyses of the diet (δ13C, δ15N) can we answer questions on their nutritional habits, and, eventually, about dietary differences diet among the members of the community.
