Abstract
| The authors provide an overview of the principal characteristics of avian viruses belonging to the family Adenoviridae, which comprises non-enveloped, linear double-stranded DNA viruses classified into three genera. They describe how these viruses generally exhibit a narrow host range and that infections are often asymptomatic, although severe clinical disease may develop in certain cases, particularly in young birds. The authors highlight the important role of co-evolutionary relationships with the host in determining viral pathogenicity and note that molecular methods currently predominate in the diagnosis of avian adenovirus infections. They further point out that the genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics of avian adenoviruses remain incompletely understood. Host switching and environmental changes may, however, increase the epidemiological significance of these viruses, underscoring the need for their continued surveillance.
