Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to support engineering design activities, while problem formulation, solution selection and verification remain essential. This paper examines how AI supports task clarification, the generation and selection of solutions, and verification-based feedback. Through these activities, it explores how the engineer's role may evolve as an increasing number of design tasks are supported by AI tools. The digital conductor metaphor connects cognitive, methodological and organisational changes. The key challenge for the future of engineering design is not merely the application of AI tools, but the effective integration of human expertise and AI-based support.
