Abstract
| The evaluation of scientific performance has become a central component of modern academic and clinical life over recent decades. Impact factor, h-index, citation-based indicators, journal-level metrics, and alternative metrics (altmetrics) are now used not only in scientific communication, but also in the allocation of research funding, academic promotion, and institutional rankings. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the most important scientometric indicators, including their principles, applications, and limitations, with special emphasis on clinical research and internal medicine. The article discusses the impact factor, h-index, article-level citation metrics, the “highly cited” and “hot paper” categories, as well as CiteScore, SJR, SNIP, and altmetric systems. Institutional and university rankings are also reviewed, together with major sources of distortion in scientometric evaluation. The review emphasizes that bibliometric indicators are useful orientation tools; however, they are not sufficient on their own to determine scientific or clinical value. In clinical medicine, methodological quality, reproducibility, and actual impact on patient care remain essential considerations. Scientometric indicators should therefore be regarded primarily as measures of scientific visibility and communication, the interpretation of which always requires critical professional judgment.
