Abstract
The study of urban landscape dynamics is essential for understanding the long-term functioning, resilience, and climate adaptation role of urban green infrastructure. As a rapidly growing and climate-sensitive medium-sized city, Kecskemét is particularly well suited for examining the relationships between urbanization processes and changes in green space. The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess urban landscape dynamics using satellite-derived vegetation indices for the period between 2017 and 2025. The research employs the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) time series calculated from Sentinel-2 multispectral data, which reliably reflects vegetation cover and vitality even in urban environments, while reducing distortions caused by soil and atmospheric effects. The analysis is based on error-filtered annual EVI composites restricted to the vegetation period, as well as a ΔEVI difference map for the 2017–2025 period. These were complemented with zonal statistical methods to reveal differences between city districts. According to our results, the average urban EVI for Kecskemét decreased from 0.399 to 0.337, indicating a moderate but consistent decline in vegetation condition. The observed changes exhibit a spatially heterogeneous, mosaic-like pattern: negative ΔEVI values are primarily concentrated in built-up, transitional, and suburban areas, where increased surface sealing, industrial expansion, and the transformation of garden-city plots have led to significant losses of green space. In contrast, positive or stable EVI values are found in large contiguous forest blocks, recreational green areas, and certain institutional zones, where biological maturation, spontaneous revegetation, or targeted green space development has occurred. The results indicate that gains in green space are generally fragmented and often temporary, whereas losses are, in many cases, permanent and driven by structural transformations. Thus, the ΔEVI-based analysis reveals not only changes in vegetation status, but also the underlying dynamics of how urban landscapes function, which are of critical importance for future green infrastructure planning and prioritization.
