Abstract

The authors revised a large representative set of the Mexican, Mesoamerican, West Indian and South American species of the discussed Rondeletia complex (Delprete 1999) from anatomical and morphological points of view. The study included more than 100 species and it was supported by the molecular studies by Rova and collaborators (1999, 2002). Both approaches confirmed the polyphyletic character of the Rondeletia complex pointed out by Steyermark (1967) and Borhidi (1982) and the separation of the genera Arachnothryx and Rogiera from Rondeletia. The studies did not confirm the genus Javorkaea (Borhidi and Járai-Komlódi 1983) consequently it must be merged into Arachnothryx as it was proposed by Lorence (1991). Studies have been focused on two species group showing „intermediate characters”. Both of them turned to be well differentiated on generic level by several anatomical, morphological and molecular features and described as Renistipula separated from Arachnothryx and Rovaeanthus separated from Rogiera.
