Abstract

Participation research focuses on a very simple but rather complex research question: why do different social groups decide to take up educational programs and others do not? In our research we are concentrating on understanding the role of part-time students in higher education institutions. For this reason, we conducted a survey among the part-time students at the University of Debrecen and at the College of Nyíregyháza (n=1.151). Our purpose was to reveal the socio-cultural and socio-demographic features of part-time students as well as the features of the higher education participation. The result of the research suggests the both parents level of schooling affects whether part-time students have a university or college degree. The proportion of part-time learners having obtained a university or college degree is only 35% in Nyíregyháza, whereas nearly 60% of part-time students have a university degree at the University of Debrecen.
