Abstract
For many centuries the study of speech was focused on speech sounds. This initial period was followed by the emergence of experimental phonetics, and then complex speech research arrived on the scene. This paper discusses the ’hot topics’ of this complex field based on a survey of opinions of a number of outstanding representatives of international phonetic science and the key topics of five prestigious world congresses of phonetics. Today the main areas of speech science are speech production, prosody and speech technology. The paper surveys the most popular research topics and the interesting changes that took place: the modifications and the disappearance of some topics as well as the emergence of new ones, such as the effect of COVID-19 on speech and speech science.
