Abstract
Abstract Sealing of former agricultural soil surfaces, or covering it by anthropogenic materials are increasing worldwide due to a numerous factors such as economic growth, population increase, rising living standards, availability of cheap agricultural land, inner city problems and enhanced personal mobility. Conversion of agricultural land to residential or recreational peri-urban land is an important challenge that has received little attention thus far. In case of Debrecen and surrounding peri-urban settlements this extension was detected and mapped between 1990-2012, using existing land cover and remote sensed datasets. Totally 296 ha were delineated, which are mostly new residential areas with small gardens, in one case a recreational area was constructed. The identification of these areas allows a ‘space for time substituion’ designed study of soil transformations in the future. This paper was supported by the János Bolyai Research Scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
