Abstract

During World War I, no general censorship of the press existed in Hungary, the obligation of presentation before publication only concerned those issues that „gave reason for that”. For the administration of orders taken on the basis of exceptional authority a Committee of Military Supervision was established, within which a sub-committee dealt with the affairs of the press. There emerged the practice of the journals voluntarily presenting their communiqués acquired outside the official channels to the Press sub-committee for this to judge whether these endangered the „interests of warfare” or not. The papers generally devoted considerable attention to the Russian revolutions of 1917. The majority of the reports were made on the basis of press telegrams, which could only be published after official control. As for the so-called editorials, the traces of censorship could only be detected in the case of Népszava. Nonetheless, sharp critique of the Hungarian regime and eulogy of the Bolshevik takeover both appeared on the pages of this social democratic daily. The inconsistent character of the censorship certainly played a role in whether an article was authorised or censored.
