Abstract
The history of the construction of the stone theatre contributes to the plastic presentation of the history of Kaposvár during the dualism era, to the grasp of the nature of the changes and the extent of civilization. From the beginnings of rural theatre in the reform era to the establishment of various theatres, their audiences, the plays performed and their echoes, our sources (mainly posters, stage playbills, press, reminiscences) help us to understand how a small town like Kaposvár with a population of 24,000 became part of the cultural circle that had developed in the world by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
