Abstract
This paper presents pro-Hindi and pro-Sanskrit discourse as a source of changes in the Romani language, together with its roots, development and current state. Taking a look at all of the entries in Romani dictionaries published in Hungary between 1979 and 2021, it concludes that dictionary editors follow individual and uncoordinated practices regarding Hindi and Sanskrit loanwords. The majority of these items reflect a high number of serious lexical, phonological, morphological and semantic problems in both the source and the target languages, with special regard to the absurd borrowing of forms that are homophonous with taboo words. The study examines the similarities and differences between the tatsama words in modern Indo-Aryan languages and the Hindi and Sanskrit loans transferred to Romani language. Finally, the paper demonstrates the rate of Hindi and Sanskrit borrowings, which may exceed half of the actual word stock in certain dictionaries.
