Abstract

The aims of this pilot study are the preliminary investigation of Hungarian EFL students’ language attitudes towards non-native accented English, and testing whether EFL students are open to engaging with texts targeting a positive change in attitudes. The participants were 25 students of the University of Szeged, all of them English Studies BA students or English teacher trainees. In this paper, the main focus is on correlation analysis results, which show that the more the respondents perceive their English as Hungarian-accented, the less satisfied they are with it, and those who are not satisfied with their own accent tend to think that acquiring a native-like accent is necessary for Hungarian EFL learners. The results show that the participants tend to view Hungarian-accented English as problematic, and they often desire to acquire an idealized (and hardly attainable) native-like accent. The participants were open to engaging with the presented text targeting attitude change, and considered its contents useful – especially those participants who expressed dissatisfaction with their own accent.
