Abstract

The Bible translation by Káldi György published in 1626, the so-called Káldi Bible, was considered the official Catholic translation until the middle of the 20th century. The text, which played an important role in the history of Hungarian culture, has a wide range of multi-layer antecedent manuscripts, which have not yet been explored in sufficient detail. Until now, the exploration has been hindered by the fact that both the original manuscript and the manuscript fragments have been extensively corrected, that is, crossed out or rewritten. By transcribing the corpora – i. e. making them researchable – we can hope to get definitive answers to hitherto unsolved questions (authorship, genetic relationships). The Latin source text, which is the subject of my thesis, was identified during the separation and transcription of the manuscript text versions. When Káldi created his original manuscript, the texts of the various Vulgate versions used in the Catholic Church and available for Káldi were not completely the same. The Latin source text was identified based on the conclusions from sporadic biographical data and the historical evidence of the Jesuits as well as a comparative study of the texts based on the data of a handcorrected specimen copy sent from Rome to the Officina Plantiniana in 1598. The list of correspondence between the original manuscript and the Vulgate editions conclusively proves that it is the text of the first Plantin edition of the so-called Sixto-Clementine Vulgate (Antwerp, 1599) that Káldi György translated in 1605–1607.
