Abstract

The present paper is part of a larger research project that examines the works of 15th and 16th-century Protestant theologians (Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Georg Major, Johann Brenz, David Chytraeus, Jean Calvin, Théodore de Bèze, Pietro Martire Vermigli, Heinrich Bullinger, Rudolf Gwalther, Ludwig Lavater, Johannes Oekolampad, Wolfgang Musculus, Benedictus Aretius and Girolamo Zanchi) preserved in Transylvania. One of the most important Transylvanian Catholic libraries is that of the Royal Lyceum in Cluj. The library administered by the Jesuits until 1773 and then by the Piarists, was founded in 1579 and continued growing until the nationalisation in 1948. About 80 % of the 58 library prints to be researched were in the Carpathian Basin in the 16th century already. The majority of the 16th-century book owners were Hungarians, among them there were two important Reformed bishops, Péter Melius Juhász and András Sándor Tordai, and a leading figure of Unitarianism in Cluj, Bernhard Jacobinus. In the 17th century, most of the volumes were in the possession of Unitarian and Reformed pastors. Roman Catholics only began to collect the works of Calvinist and Lutheran theologians in the 18th century; these were mainly acquired in Cluj-Napoca.
