Abstract

The primary objective of the paper was to compare the usage of business information systems by enterprises in Hungary as well as in another EU member state, Austria. The initial assumptions of the paper were proven, according to which enterprises in Austria operate a more sophisticated and developed IT infrastructure, being at a different development level and having diverse characteristics. Enterprises in Austria can better exploit the benefits provided by business information systems and the penetration rate of those systems among Austrian enterprises significantly depends on the adequacy of their size. However, the other key assumption, according to which enterprises choose their business information systems for different reasons in different size categories but the reasons are the same in each size category regardless of the surveyed country, was eventually ruled out
