Abstract

Metaphor and poeticity In my paper, I am addressing the following questions from the perspective of cognitive stylistics and cognitive poetics: What are the general features of a poetic metaphor? How can poeticity (poetic quality) itself and metaphor be interpreted? How can the relationship of everyday and poetic metaphors be described? What are the main theoretical and methodological possibilities and problems of their differentiation? What makes a poetic metaphor and what is the point when it actually gains a poetic quality? On the basis of an overview of the relevant literature, and on the basis of analyses, it can be ascertained that cognitive metaphor theory, especially blending theory, provides sufficient background for interpreting the notion of metaphor. The paper makes a suggestion for clarifying the relationship between everyday and literary, poetic metaphors as well. Although it seems an open question for the time being as to what are the essential operations and specificities of describing a poetic metaphor in general, the following text creating operations, characteristics and factors may be highlighted: devices of extension, elaboration, questioning and combining; novelty; the role of context, the proportion of metaphors, their interplay and scope within a text.
