Abstract

The extent to which the network of settlements became destroyed in the Carpathian Basin in the Ottoman era is an important question of Hungarian history. It is generally held that the majority of Hungarian villages was swept away by the Ottoman conquest and frequent military campaigns, and the network of settlements completely transformed especially in Southeast Transdanubia. However, investigation on the Mohács sub-region has revealed totally different facts. Christian censuses compiled at the end of the 17th century suggest that the majority of medieval villages survived despite the fact that their population had significantly changed. Sources used in the study have helped define the distances and location of certain villages and thus, the settlements could be drawn on maps. Therefore, it can be proved that the dense network of the villages of the Mohács sub-region still existed at the end of the Ottoman era, and it probably became destructed during Rákóczi’s War of Independence.
