Abstract
Narrative is a special type of spontaneous speech irrespective of age. Our research question is whether the disfluency patterns of such narratives show variation in different age groups (between 20 and 80 years). Narratives produced by 57 speakers were analyzed according to the types and occurrences of disfluencies. No significant differences were found in the relative frequency of either the error type and the uncertyinty types disfluencies across ages. However, significantly less filled pauses were found in old than in young speakers. Young speakers were found to be significantly better at detecting and repairing error-type disfluencies. Results suggest that there are age-specific patterns of the used strategies to overcome the speech planning difficulties. Findings of this study support that the age of the speakers do not inevitably correspond to their speaking capability.
