Abstract

A constant task of philological studies, especially those in historical linguistics, is the preparation of up-to-date critical editions of extant early documents of a language in order to make their multi-faceted utilization feasible. Th e publication of linguistic monuments involves the cooperation of a number of disciplines and requires contributions coming from a number of diff erent kinds of experts. Th e delimitation of their ranges of tasks and the harmonisation of a variety of often contradictory requirements makes it necessary to coordinate participants’ eff orts from time to time. Th e article aims at assisting that process by defi ning the domains of philological and historical linguistic operations in the interpretation of early documents. In the author’s view, these domains are as follows: 1. pictorial level (facsimile), 2. graphemic level (transliteration), 3–4. spoken-language level (phonetic and phonological reconstruction), 5. morphemic interpretation (identifi cation of stems and suffi xes), 6. lexical interpretation (identifi cation of words), 6. syntactic interpretation (identifi cation of constructions and sentences), 8. textsemantic-hermeneutic interpretation (establishing the “message” of the text). Th ese operations determine, in the given framework, to what extent and how extensively the words, constructions, or sentences of the given document can be approximated by those of present-day Hungarian and represented in terms of other linguistic forms as part of their interpretation.
