Abstract

This article considers the influence of the experience of the formation of voluntary associations in European countries on self-organization in Russian society from the last third of the 18 th to the early 20 th century. It examines how European forms of associations and individual practices associated with their functioning were borrowed in the course of the creation of Russian societies. Examples of the transfer of ideas and practices, as well as symbols used in the activities of Russian societies in the field of science, health and culture are presented. Voluntary associations in Russia are interpreted as a European invention, successfully taking root on Russian soil and often acquiring original ideological content. The author also describes the key explanatory theories of the formation of civil society based on the experience of states in Europe and North America. The article shows which aspects of this experience were applicable to imperial Russia and to what extent.
